NATIONAL GRID TRANSCO – STATEMENT REGARDING POWER CUT IN SOUTH LONDON
29 August 2003
Statement Two – 13.30 hrs.
Following yesterday evening’s power failure at 6:20pm, affecting large parts of South London and parts of Kent, there was considerable disruption most obviously to underground and over-ground rail services.
National Grid Transco reiterates its apology to everyone affected by the disruption which was caused by a fault in the electricity transmission system. We are in touch with all the relevant authorities and a thorough investigation is underway.
An initial account of last night’s events and the action taken is set out below:
At 6.10pm yesterday evening an alarm indicated a fault on a transformer at our Hurst substation in Kent.
We switched the transformer out of service at 6.20pm, and power was still able to flow into London through other circuits.

From Mr Dennis Woodman. Sir, In all the coverage of the scrapping of the 192 directory enquiry service, I have not seen a single mention of the possible competition from the web. It took 80 seconds to go on line with my broadband connection and to enter "Financial Times" and "London" into my directory enquiry web page.

Business And Finance: Nevada shows E32.8m loss after writedown
Irish Times; Aug 05, 2003
Nevada tele.com, the Irish firm taken over by Energis earlier this year, lost E32.8 million in the year to the end of March 2002 after writing down the value of its telecoms assets. Nevada, which recently changed its name to Energis, saw pre-tax losses increase sixfold in the period - up from E5.4 million in the year to the end of March 2001 - after taking a E21.8 million charge for asset impairment. New figures filed with the Company's Registration Office in Dublin show turnover at the firm's operations in the Republic and Northern Ireland doubled to E24.6 million to the end of 2002. Energis Ireland provides Bank of Ireland and UTV Internet with a range of telecoms services using fibre networks leased from firms such as Bord Gais. Its operation in Northern Ireland provides telecoms services to former shareholder Viridian.

Energis Shareholders Action Group (ESAG)

Another example of how the Net is enabling small shareholders to band together - this time to enable 1800 enraged Energis small shareholders to raise £30K as a "war chest" to fund the services of a QC.
The site name was www.chelys.net (cheeky as this was the name of the banks' takeover vehicle for Energis!) but I see it diverts to this link:
ESAG

Time for small shareholders to speak up

Article about ESAG
The following item about ESAG appears in this month's "Director" magazine (not yet available online AFAIK)
quote:
The World Wide Web is being used to mobilise disaffected small shareholders in telecoms group Energis
The internet has united an army of angry private investors to campaign against the telecoms provider Energis and to raise the money to pay for possible legal action.
Energis, once valued at nearly £14bn, fell spectacularly from grace in July 2002 when Ernst & Young were appointed administrators. It was effectively taken over by the banks and bondholders in a debt-for-equity swap that left shareholders with nothing. The shares, which had traded at up to 800p, were worthless.
It has since recovered, winning deals worth some £lbn under chief executive John Pluthero (but £200m in debt in its full year results in July). The shareholders case is that the tumaround makes a mockery of the administration and that they deserve compensation. "The shares were affordable and we thought the problems with the banks would be sorted out-it was nowhere near as bad as Marconi-and the share price would recover," says Mary Bekes, who bought 500,000 shares with her husband George. "We were completely amazed when the company ceased to be and even more amazed that it continued to trade ever more successfully without the encumbrance of its shareholders."

Energis secures Centrica contract
ENERGIS, the UK's third largest fixed-line telecoms group, has won a three-year, multi-million pound contract to supply call centre, telephone and internet services to British Gas group Centrica.
All calls to and from Centrica's UK call centres will now be routed over its network in an effort to meet Centrica's growing customer service demands. As well as British Gas, the Centrica group of businesses includes break-down service the AA, telecommunications division One.Tel, and personal finance division Goldfish. Energis, which has regional offices in Leeds and Reading, will also provide a virtual private telephone network connecting all Centrica's sites and remote workers. Energis was one of the stars of the tech industry, but when the telecoms downturn hit 18 months ago the group's stocks tumbled and it was dropped from the FTSE 100 index. Job losses soon followed with the UK operations the hardest hit including Leeds-based operation Energis Squared, its main services division. However, its fortunes have improved and last month it reported that revenues had grown by 11 per cent to £770m in the year end to March 31. The company also expects to double the size of its 'core business' – its hosting division, which has its headquarters in Leeds.
